NEW TIMBUKTU™ VERSION LETS USERS CONTROL MULTIPLE MACINTOSH SYSTEMS IN SCREEN
WINDOWS
Emeryville, CA-—March 20, 1990—-Today Farallon introduced a set of major
enhancements for Timbuktu, Farallon’s popular network software for screen
sharing and file-transfer. With version 3.1, Timbuktu now allows users to
observe and control a number of other Macintosh computers at once, in multiple,
resizable windows. Point to point file-transfer speeds have also been
increased three to seven times over version 3.0.
Multiwindows
Timbuktu 3.1 enables users to observe and control the screen activity of
multiple Macintosh computer hosts simultaneously, each in a separate window.
All host windows are updated “live,” regardless of which window is selected and
active. With Timbuktu 3.1, the user can harness the power of the network to
operate any number of computers at once.
New Guest Menu
Another new Timbuktu feature is the guest menu, which groups a number of
Timbuktu functions in a pull-down menu near the right end of the screen’s menu
bar. The user can manage all guests from this menu, instantly changing a
controller to an observer, or vice versa, simply by clicking on an icon. The
menu also provides a log of past and current visitors to the user’s computer.
The familiar scissors icon now selectively disconnects a particular guest or
all guests, quickly and easily.
The “Wait for Guest” feature, formerly on the desk accessory menu, now
resides in the new guest menu. This feature allows a user to share the
computer with another user without revealing a password. This feature is
especially useful for user support or impromptu voice/data conferences.
Faster File Transfer
Timbuktu’s file-transfer speeds were dramatically increased for version
3.1, which is now up to seven times faster than version 3.0. Timbuktu’s
file-transfer facility allows users to exchange any combination of files and
folders point to point, without routing them through a server or interrupting
the other activities of either host.
Hands Across the Network
“Timbuktu is especially well suited for user support,” said Tom Rielly,
Farallon’s Director of Marketing. “For the first time, a support person can
view and compare the screens of multiple computers at once — and see, for
example, which user has an incompatible driver of some kind in their System
Folder.”
The only limit on the number of windows is available memory. Each host
session requires 30 to 50K of RAM. “We've had up to 15 systems (windows)
running on one computer,” said Fredel.
Pricing
Suggested retail price for Timbuktu on one Macintosh computer is unchanged,
at $149. A 30-pack is $1995.00. One copy of Timbuktu is required for every
Macintosh. Volume pricing for sites of more than 100 users is also available.
Free Upgrades for Timbuktu 3.0 Users
Timbuktu 3.1 upgrades will be mailed to registered Timbuktu 3.0 owners free
of charge. New user’s guides can be purchased directly from Farallon for
$10.00. Registered users of Timbuktu 2.0 can upgrade for $50.00 for the
initial package, plus five dollars for each additional serial number.
Shipping Availability
Timbuktu 3.1 will ship the first week in April.
